Homework

Homework

Homework is an extremely valuable part of learning at Epsom and Ewell High School. We want students to develop into young people who are able to manage their time effectively, maintain focus even when not in a school environment and develop a work ethic that makes them stand out from the crowd. Homework is also an excellent learning and assessment tool to either further understanding of a particular concept or identify successes and misunderstandings.

We have a timetable for the setting of homework based on the contact time a subject has with each year group.

  • Key Stage 3 (years 7, 8 and 9) are set homework dependent on the number of lessons of teaching they have in each subject over a fortnight.
  • Subjects with more contact time will set more homework

Subject

Frequency

English, maths and science

1 per week

Art, PE and Performing Arts

1 per week on a rotation

RS, Geography, History, Computing and Languages

1 per fortnight

Food Technology and Design Technology

1 each per half term

  • Key Stage 4 (years 10 and 11) will be set one piece of homework a week from each subject
  • Key Stage 5 (years 12 and 13) will be set one piece of homework each lesson

Microsoft Teams and Class Charts:

All homework will be set as ‘assignments’ on Microsoft Teams. Some tasks can be completed and uploaded straight back onto Teams so no printing is required. Teachers will also post homework and deadlines to Class Charts where students and parents can access this via the app or desktop site.

Types of homework:

Homework tasks may be any of the following:

  • SAM Learning online activities

  • Sparx Maths online activities

  • Reading (books, articles, web pages) with associated questions

  • Reading (books, articles, web pages) using the Reading Progress app on Microsoft Teams to assess the accuracy of reading

  • Assessment preparation

  • Online tasks using programs such as Hegarty maths

  • Worksheets related to classwork

  • Exam questions

  • Creative tasks

  • Research tasks

Standard of homework:

We expect all students to take pride in any piece of work they do including homework. Homework should be presented neatly, with appropriate care and clearly marked in books by the use of ‘h/w’ in the margin. When appropriate homework may be typed and printed out or uploaded to Teams.

We may ask students to re-do their homework if we believe appropriate care and attention has not been applied and detentions may be issued for non-completion.

SEND students:

Homework should be appropriately differentiated or support offered to enable all students to access the work. We also run a homework club on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays after school in the LRC so that students can have access to school computers and help from teaching assistants to complete tasks they may find difficult. All students in all years, particularly those with additional needs, are welcome.
