Alternative Provision

Alternative Provision Curriculum Vision

In alternative provision, we aim to provide support around individual students and their families linking and working with the Wave and the SEND teams. We aim to give all our students the confidence and self-belief to build on their lives allowing for a successful and happy adult life. We do this through the teaching of life-skills such as money management, social skills such as conflict resolution and self-esteem work. We also support students in completing college or apprenticeship applications to ensure that all AP students remain in education post-16.

AP is a creative way to work with our young people. All our students will have an opportunity to learn essential new skills through life skills, cooking, gardening, construction and physical activity. It is a bespoke programme suited to individuals learning and growing to achieve their success.

How do we help our students to ROAR?

Resilience: We work on building confidence, resilience and self-esteem to enable them to tackle more challenging tasks, lessons, subjects and new skills. We learn life skills and debate/discuss the world around us allowing us to learn and grow.

Open Minded: students become open minded adults and it is our intention to encourage opinions, thoughts and ideas to be able to discuss and learn through each other. We encourage a greater understanding of culture, current affairs and society as it has evolved.

Aspirational: In AP, we may work through underlying issues as students may be suffering with, anxiety, mental health concerns or family problems and try to encourage our students to aim high in their career goals.

Reflective: Students are encouraged to be reflective in each session both individually and with each other. We regularly reflect how their ongoing learning is relevant to their lives. This can be also be done through the mentoring sessions.

In addition to the basic offer that each year group gets in AP, there will be other units of work or themes covered. The implementation these will be very bespoke to the needs of each year group at various points during the school year and is subject to change as we respond to changes in the world, school life or the students’ personal circumstances. Themes that may be covered include friendship, resilience, facing challenges, growth mindset, how we learn, mental health and sleep. Each year group also works towards achieving the Prince’s Trust Award covering topics such as managing money and living a healthy life.
