Year 7 literacy & numeracy catch up provision
The catch-up premium is additional funding provided to schools by the Department for Education for year 7 pupils recorded in the key stage 2 assessment data as not having achieved the expected level in reading or mathematics. The Year 7 catch-up premium allocation is £500 for each pupil.
The grant may be spent for the educational benefit of pupils registered at that school, or for the benefit of pupils registered at the school. The grant does not have to be completely spent by schools and academies in the financial year; some or all of it may be carried forward to future financial years.
Using the Funding
In making decision on using the funding, schools should assess the needs of individual pupils to decide the best way to use the funding and select programmes and approaches for which there is the good evidence of effectiveness in improving outcomes.
Effective use of funding to support catch-up may include:
- Individual tuition in addition to classroom teaching but schools need to take care to minimise risks of pupils missing out on mainstream lessons
- Intensive small-group tuition, perhaps supported by new classroom materials and resources.
- Purchasing external services and materials to add to those provided by the school.
The amount of Year 7 Catch Up Premium allocated to Everest Community Academy for 2017-18 is £15,278. The total number of eligible pupils was as follows: 27% pupils did not achieve the required standard in reading and 30% pupils in mathematics.
Use of Year 7 Catch Up Premium
The Year 7 Catch Up Premium has been used to provide additional support in English, mathematics and science for lower attaining pupils and to provide support with literacy and numeracy through withdrawal groups or one to one.
We believe this uses the funding in an integrated way to ensure that entitled students receive the opportunity of additional support without missing out on mainstream lessons.
The impact in educational attainment arising from expenditure of the Year 7 Catch Up Premium from 2016-7 based on Teaching Assessments and EESATs (Epsom and Ewell Standard Attainment Tests) has been positive as the table below shows:
