Why study English?

A challenging and exciting subject, English Literature offers a range of opportunities for students to develop their literary skills. Through the study of novels, plays and poems students explore conventions of genre. Students have the opportunity to critically analyse, evaluate writers’ intentions and reflect on a range of contemporary and historical issues.

Entry Requirements

Students will be required to achieve at least level 4 in both disciplines of GCSE English and to have achieved a level 5 in at least one of them.

• A study of A Streetcar Named Desire
• A comparison between Frankenstein and Never Let Me Go
• An examination of Shakespeare’s Othello
• An examination of post 2000 poetry
• An examination of a selection of poems from John Donne
• Coursework: students write a comparative essay on two texts of their choice
