Students complete four units in total – two units at AS and two at A2. Course overview


Unit 1 - Poetry and Prose 1800 – 1945 (examination)

  • Section A – Poetry. Students study a selection of poems
  • Section B – Prose. Students study one of the classics such as Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray or Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

Unit 2 - Comparative Study Coursework

Students complete two written pieces based on their study of three thematically linked texts.

  • Task 1: Close reading OR re-creative writing with commentary
  • Task 2: An essay on linked texts


Unit 3 – Drama and Poetry pre-1800 (examination)


Section A – Shakespeare. Students study one of the following: King Lear, Antony and Cleopatra, The Tempest or A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Section B – Drama and Poetry pre-1800. Students study a play by Webster or Sheridan and a selection of poems by Chaucer, Milton, Blake or Marvell

Unit 4 – Texts in Time Coursework

Students write a comparative essay of three texts including one poetry and one prose text.

Students have the opportunity to retake GCSE English with our department. This course can be completed as a one year course.
